Back on Jan. 21, I got to participate in my first ever march and I am happy to say that it was the "Power to the Polls" Women's March in Lansing, Mich. I had the joy of going with some of my fellow journalists and my friend, Erika. It was fulfilling to march for what we believed in together.
It was a cold and muddy winter afternoon at the Capitol, but still hundreds of people were gathered. We listened to speakers given impassioned speeches and we chanted in unison. Regardless of the fact that we all came from different backgrounds, we all had one thing in common that day: we were standing up against injustice.
I was reminded of an event I covered for the news-magazine I write for. It was in June during a Pride even at a local club. I heard trans-activist Grace Bacon speak. She talked about her life as a cross dresser, before they really had a word that was accurate for how she really felt. She also talked about our government and something she said stuck with me.
"That government now has become a tyrant in itself and we have a civic duty to resist."
I am happy to say that I took one step in doing that and I look forward to voting this year whenever I can.
